German Economy Grows by 0.3 Percent, But Rhine Water Levels Cause Concern

The latest economic data shows a growth of the German economy by 0.3 percent. Although this figure initially conveys stability, a closer look reveals significant structural risks that could curb growth. In particular, the critically low water levels of the Rhine currently pose a significant obstacle to the ongoing recovery.
This situation is made particularly complex by the resulting logistical problems. The limited capacity of inland waterway transport, combined with rising freight costs, is causing concern. These factors do not only affect logistics but directly touch the core of the industrial value chain. Our analysis suggests that these factors could potentially negatively impact industrial production and export growth—this is a cascading effect that goes beyond the mere transport problem.
Despite these persistent uncertainties, we currently anticipate a moderate pace; only slight GDP growth is expected for the third quarter. This points to an economy that is moving forward but is simultaneously being hampered by fundamental infrastructure bottlenecks and external shocks. Therefore, we must assess the economic situation not only based on the figures of the last quarter but also on the sustainability of the supply chains.
