OpenAI integrates advertising: Data privacy concerns meet competitive pressure

OpenAI is introducing advertising into its services, which encounters initial concerns regarding sensitive user data. At the same time, the company attempts to maintain transparency by giving users extensive control options for managing advertising data, including the ability to hide or delete it. A key point here is that advertising is excluded for officially underage accounts.
Nevertheless, access to an ad-free experience is tied to a paid plan membership, with even the entry-level subscription, known as ChatGPT Go, expected to contain advertising. This reflects a broader trend: historically, advertising has been a necessary profit generator for technology companies after the dot-com bubble. Given these developments, user reaction to advertising in ChatGPT is questionable.
Competitive pressure is a central factor here. Competitors like Anthropic Claude and Google Gemini offer ad-free alternatives, which represents a crucial test field for user loyalty for OpenAI. The availability of such ad-free offerings from the competition significantly increases the credibility risk for OpenAI.
