GEZ Stops Payment Reminders by Mail – What Citizens Need to Know

The broadcasting fee, collected by the joint entity ARD, ZDF, and Deutschlandradio, will no longer use the mailing of physical payment reminders. This change specifically affects households that have not set up a direct debit mandate. The GEZ justifies this step with goals of cost efficiency and sustainability, expecting that foregoing postal reminders will save six million letters annually.
However, this transition is causing concern among consumers. Critics express worry that payments might be forgotten as a result, which in turn carries the risk of reminder fees of eight euros each. Given these developments, experts strongly advise consumers to proactively set up a direct debit mandate. Previously, the reminder amount was 55.08 euros, which was issued quarterly.
The core message is therefore: To avoid payment arrears and stay informed, setting up a SEPA direct debit mandate is advisable, as the GEZ is discontinuing physical reminders.
