Frankfurt's Plan Against Heat Islands: Massive Greening Initiatives in Focus

Frankfurt is implementing comprehensive strategies to combat urban heat islands in areas like Bahnhofsviertel and Höchst. Plans include extensive greening of public spaces, stricter tree management, and the acquisition of private land for new green areas. Furthermore, the city is planning cooling facilities like mist generators and reviewing adjustments to employee working hours.

Faced with rising temperatures, the city of Frankfurt am Main is taking concrete measures to combat urban heat islands. The responsible Ministry for Climate is focusing its efforts on particularly affected districts, with areas such as the Bahnhofsviertel and Höchst being central to new strategies.

The planned measures are comprehensive and go beyond mere planting. Initiatives are planned to green squares, streets, and even parking lots. Another important aspect concerns tree stock management: the felling of trees will henceforth be subject to stricter review to preserve cool spots. To realize the new green spaces, the city even plans to acquire private properties.

Additionally, temporary cooling facilities are to be created. By next summer, the installation of five mist generators and the placement of additional drinking fountains are planned. Furthermore, it is being examined whether the working hours of city employees need to be adjusted on particularly hot days to reduce strain. This combination of infrastructural changes and social adaptations aims to make the urban climate more resilient.
