Baden-Württemberg introduces strict mobile phone ban in schools
Baden-Württemberg wird ab dem Schuljahr 2027/28 ein umfassendes Verbot von Smartphones an allen öffentlichen Schulen durchsetzen. Das Verbot gilt den gesamten Schultag über, lässt aber Ausnahmen für Notfälle, gesundheitliche Gründe sowie bestimmte Pausen und Veranstaltungen zu. Ziel ist die Verbesserung des Lernumfeldes durch klare Regeln.
A new school regulation is on the way: Baden-Württemberg plans to introduce a strict ban on mobile phones in all educational institutions. According to the planned ordinance, this measure will take effect at the beginning of the 2027/28 school year and affects all students and all public schools within the state. The core of the regulation stipulates that smartphones are generally prohibited throughout the entire school day, including break times, in order to improve the learning environment and minimize distractions. However, exceptions are provided: the ban does not apply to lunch breaks, boarding schools, or extracurricular events. Nevertheless, certain uses remain permitted. In particular, possession and use of phones are allowed in case of emergencies and for specific health needs. Furthermore, the regulation stipulates that the use of devices for educational purposes in class remains possible, thereby ensuring a balance between digital control and pedagogical benefit.
