Yoga as Full-Body Training: Strengthening for Arms, Shoulders, and Wrists

Yoga is an effective, equipment-free way to strengthen the muscles of the shoulders, upper arms, and wrists using poses like Downward-Facing Dog and the Plank. A complete routine requires warming up, holding poses for 15–30 seconds, and stretching. Scientific evidence supports its benefits, including improved arm strength in older adults.

Yoga is increasingly recognized as an effective method for performing targeted strength exercises for the upper extremities, especially training the muscles of the shoulders, upper arms, and wrists. It is particularly noteworthy that this workout requires no special equipment; only one's own body weight is sufficient to ensure effective training.

A series of specific poses is well-suited for these target muscle groups. Effective poses include Downward-Facing Dog, the Plank position, Dolphin, Cobra, Side Plank, and Crow. To achieve optimal training effect, a routine should always include a thorough warm-up section. It is advisable to hold the static poses for a duration of 15 to 30 seconds, followed by concluding stretching exercises.

These health benefits are also scientifically proven. For example, a meta-analysis from 2021 linked yoga with an improvement in arm strength in older adults. Thus, yoga offers not only a physical challenge but also a scientifically supported way to maintain and increase the functional stability of the upper limbs.
