This sudden demand led Canada to accuse Lutnick of changing the terms at the last minute.
The tensions escalated further when U.S. President Donald Trump threatened new punitive tariffs of 50%. This pattern suggests that Donald Trump's demands for Canadian submission have fueled the conflict. In response, Prime Minister Mark Carney declared that Canada would not accept being treated like a subsidiary of the USA. Given this development, Canada signaled that it would take countermeasures and explicitly announced that it would impose punitive tariffs on the USA.
It should be recalled that the original agreement primarily aimed to lower tariffs on steel and aluminum. The confrontation is now further aggravated by the announcement of 50 percent punitive tariffs on Canadian goods, made by Donald Trump.
