Shein plans IPO in Hong Kong on September 1 despite ethical concerns

The globally successful online retailer Shein, which originated in China, plans an initial public offering (IPO) in Hong Kong for September 1. The company relies on its business model of low-cost direct distribution of goods and boasts immense global reach, supplying over 150 countries. Estimates suggest that Shein has around 130 million users in Europe.
Despite this impressive expansion, Shein is under intense scrutiny. The company faces criticism regarding plagiarism, its environmental record, and questions about labor conditions. Another central point of criticism is that the majority of its production facilities remain located in China, even though the company moved its headquarters to Singapore in 2021.
