Poll suggests: Majority expects a successor for Merz before the 2029 election
Eine YouGov-Umfrage deutet darauf hin, dass die Mehrheit der Deutschen nicht davon ausgeht, dass Friedrich Merz bis 2029 Kanzler bleiben wird, da viele einen früheren Wechsel erwarten. Seine Autorität innerhalb der CDU wird durch Umstrukturierungen gemindert, und er steht zudem unter Kritik bezüglich seiner Krisenkommunikation.
A recent YouGov poll shows that the majority of the German population does not expect Friedrich Merz to hold the office of Chancellor until the 2029 election. Rather, significant parts of the respondents predict a change in his leadership. The results indicate that Merz is losing authority within the CDU. Specifically, 67 percent of respondents stated that a personnel restructuring would diminish his authority within the CDU. This is supported by further figures: 36 percent of Germans expect Merz to be succeeded before the 2029 election, and 18 percent even predict an early departure this year.
Although dissatisfaction with his position is becoming visible, the public did not show a clear preference when it came to a potential successor. In addition to internal tensions, Merz also faces criticism from the outside, particularly regarding his crisis communication. The poll thus paints a picture characterized by declining internal party power and external pressure, while public opinion has not yet dictated a definitive direction for a successor.
