Both poison dart frogs and the Two-colored Pyrol bird obtain their toxins or poisons for defense from external sources. In poison dart frogs, the potent toxins do not originate from internal production but are absorbed through diet, making the frogs dependent on their food source. A similar pattern is observed in the Two-colored Pyrol bird, which accumulates its poison from toxic beetles. This stored poison serves not only as a weapon for the bird but also provides protection against parasites. Thus, the overarching chemical principle connecting these two species is the acquisition of toxins from external sources.
