PHA Bioplastics: A Sustainable Alternative to Petroleum Plastics

PHA is a promising bioplastic alternative to petroleum plastics, researched since the 1960s. Although it is currently expensive and mainly used medically, it shows high potential for food and cosmetic packaging. Lowering production costs using biomass waste is key to its broader adoption.

PHA, a bioplastic, has been discussed since the 1960s and is considered a promising alternative to conventional, petroleum-based plastics. Research on this material has made enormous progress in recent years. While initial industrial production processes were improved in the 1980s, the greatest research advances in the last 15 years have been driven by biotechnological breakthroughs. Currently, PHA is still more expensive than conventional plastics and is therefore mainly used in medical applications, for example, in implants. Nevertheless, PHA holds high potential for packaging in the food and cosmetics industries. However, to fully realize this potential, lowering production costs is crucial, with the use of biomass waste as raw material playing a key role in this process.
