PHA is a bioplastic discussed since the 1960s, with recent research boosted by biotechnology. Despite potential in food and cosmetic packaging, its current high cost limits its main use to medicine. Cost reduction via biomass waste is key to broader market acceptance.

PHA, a bioplastic, has been a topic of discussion since the 1960s as an alternative to petroleum-based plastics. Research on this material has gained significant momentum over the last 15 years due to biotechnological breakthroughs. Although industrial production processes have been improved since the 1980s, PHA is currently still more expensive than conventional plastics and is therefore mainly used in medicine, for example, in implants.

Nevertheless, PHA holds great potential for packaging of food and cosmetics. Experts emphasize that the wider use of these materials, however, depends on reducing production costs. The key to this cost reduction lies in utilizing biomass waste as raw material; only through this approach can PHA expand its role as an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil plastics and thus reach a broader market.
