PHA, a bioplastic, has been a discussed material since the 1960s and is considered an alternative to petroleum-based plastics. Its scientific consideration has evolved over time, with clear advances in industrial production already recorded since the 1980s. The most recent and significant boost for PHA research came through biotechnological breakthroughs, leading to enormous progress in the last 15 years. Currently, PHA is still more expensive than conventional plastics and is therefore mainly used in the medical field, for example, in implants. Nevertheless, PHA holds considerable potential for packaging applications, especially in the food and cosmetics industries. The key to broader market acceptance and cost reduction lies in using biomass waste as raw material. Only through this approach can the cost basis of production be lowered and the full potential of PHA realized.
