OpenAI Introduces Advertising: Control for Users, But Dependence on Paid Subscriptions

OpenAI is introducing advertising into its services, which has raised concerns regarding sensitive user data. Despite initial skepticism, the company is granting users extensive control options to manage their advertising data, including the option to hide or delete it. A key point is that advertising is excluded for officially underage accounts. Nevertheless, a clear structure emerges: ad-free access requires signing up for a paid plan, even though the entry-level subscription (ChatGPT Go) contains ads. Historically, advertising was a necessary revenue stream for technology companies after the dot-com bubble, but the user reaction to advertising in ChatGPT is questionable. This market entry is countered by competitors such as Anthropic Claude and Google Gemini, which offer ad-free alternatives. This presents a crucial test of user loyalty for OpenAI and noticeably increases the credibility risk given these competitive offerings.
