Health Risks of Prolonged Fasting in Older Adults

A study of 2981 people over 15 years suggests that prolonged fasting carries health risks for those over 60. Specifically, fasting from 14 to 24 hours was linked to accelerated chronic disease development in those over 78. Shorter fasts of 6 to 11.5 hours were found to be relatively safer for the older population.

Extended daily fasting periods could pose potential health risks, particularly for people over 60 years of age. A study examined the effects of different fasting durations in a large cohort of people.

The analysis was based on data from 2981 individuals over a period of 15 years and found that longer fasting periods can be problematic for people over 60. Of particular concern for the group over 78 years old was that fasting from 14 to 24 hours was associated with an accelerated development of chronic diseases.

In contrast, shorter fasting periods between 6 and 11.5 hours proved to be relatively safer for the older group. These results underscore the need for careful consideration when adhering to fasting protocols in advanced age.
