Global Sleep Crises: How Rising Temperatures Threaten Our Night's Rest

The global sleep crisis is increasingly linked to rising global temperatures, particularly due to the increase in tropical nights. A central mechanism behind this is the overload of the body, which can no longer cool down sufficiently in the heat. The consequences are far-reaching, affecting general well-being as well as vital systems like the cardiovascular and immune systems.

The data shows a clear trend: Tropical nights, defined as nights where the temperature exceeds 20 degrees Celsius, are increasing worldwide. This sleep loss has increased significantly since the 1970s, with experts attributing a considerable part of this problem to human-made climate change. Globally, people are losing an average of nearly 56 hours of sleep per year (calculation period 2020-2025); an estimated six hours of the annual sleep deficit are attributable to these causes.

The effect is also noticeable in urban areas. In German cities, an estimated annual sleep loss of between 22 and 25 hours is assumed. The core of the problem lies in the disrupted body cooling mechanism during heat, leading to restless and interrupted sleep. Chronic sleep deprivation poses a serious risk that goes beyond mere fatigue and can have profound effects on health.
