Gasoline Rationing in Moscow: The Fuel Shortage Crisis

A gasoline rationing is currently occurring in Moscow and the surrounding areas, drawing the attention of both authorities and the population. The causes of this situation are multifaceted, encompassing geopolitical as well as seasonal factors.

A major cause is considered to be the Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries. Additionally, the increased fuel demand during the summer holidays represents a significant factor. Given these challenges, state measures have become necessary since mid-July, including export bans and adjustments to fuel quality, in order to manage the scarce supplies.

To control the distribution, major energy corporations have reacted. Gazprom Neft, Tatneft, and Rosneft have each established their own limitations on fuel consumption. This state-led regulation aims to ensure supply security in the region while simultaneously mitigating the effects of the crisis situation.
