European Union Approves New Climate Reform Package

The European Parliament on Wednesday voted to adopt a comprehensive climate reform package named 'Green Deal 2035'. The document was supported by 412 MEPs, with 178 voting against.

What will change

Under the adopted measures, EU countries must by 2035:

  • Reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 65% compared to 1990 levels
  • Convert at least 80% of public transport to electric traction
  • Ensure full thermal insulation of all public buildings

Business reaction

Industry associations expressed concern about the transition timeline. According to the head of the European Chamber of Commerce, Klaus Weber, 'the pace of change is unprecedented, and small businesses need additional support'.

The Commission promised to allocate €45 billion from the Just Transition Fund to support the most vulnerable regions.
