Drought in Germany: Lack of Precipitation and Effects of Climate Change

Anhaltende Hochdruckgebiete und der Klimawandel führen zu extrem niedrigen Wasserständen in großen Flüssen wie dem Rhein und der Elbe. Dies beeinträchtigt die Vegetation landesweit durch geringe Bodenfeuchte und hohe Verdunstung.
Germany is confronted with drought conditions characterized by below-average precipitation, particularly in the south. This situation is further exacerbated by climate change. The cause of these persistent dry periods are stable high-pressure areas, which block the usual precipitation patterns. Specifically, in Southern Germany, the months from March to May recorded significantly reduced amounts of precipitation.
Drought is defined as a condition that is drier than in 80% of years. These conditions lead to large river systems having extremely low water levels; affected are, among others, the Elbe, the Danube, and the Rhine. The combination of low soil moisture and high evaporation rates significantly impairs vegetation nationwide.
Experts point out that climate change intensifies this problem through higher temperatures and changing weather patterns. The reduction in water resources and the stress on vegetation are direct consequences of these meteorological developments.
