The CDC conducts unannounced hygiene inspections on cruise ships in US ports to verify compliance with hygiene and safety standards onboard and to protect public health. The ships are evaluated using a point system, the total score of which can be up to 100 points. A passing level has been set at 86 points.
During these recent inspections, specific deficiencies were found on some ships. For example, the Norwegian Dawn failed the inspection due to mold, fruit flies, and improper food storage. Another example is deficiencies on the MSC Meraviglia, including incorrect temperatures when defrosting steaks.
However, it is important to emphasize that low scores do not automatically signal an immediate health risk; as long as the identified deficiencies are corrected, this does not constitute an immediate health risk.
